Every year there’s a world-class festival that kicks off right here in our cozy island community that brings some of the world’s best in all-things cinema right here to our own backyard. This festival just so happens to be the Maui Film Festival, and every year the event keeps getting better and better.

This year marked the 20th year of the affair, and after two decades it did not disappoint! Celebrities of clout such as Paul Rudd and Olivia Wilde attended this year’s occasion, along with many other talented actors and actresses looking to enjoy a little aloha and a lot of fun.

Hosted in Wailea, this year’s film festival included a surf night on Father’s Day, a taste of chocolate night with some delicious and creatively-designed goodies and, as always, featured some incredible films. Featured this year was “We Rise Up,” a documentary piece showcasing the world’s top spiritual leaders and social activists, as well as movies such as “Alice the Film,” an emotional story of a single mom taking charge of her life after leaving her unfaithful husband.

Along with showings of some up-and-coming films, the festival continued with its tradition of presenting special awards to talented Hollywood stars. This year’s Shining Star Award went to Awkwafina, an Asian American comedian, actress, and rapper, known for her roles in “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Oceans 8.” In the past, this award has gone to young actors and actresses such as Adam Driver, Zac Efron, Andrew Garfield, and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Another prize worth mentioning is the Visionary Award. This year Louie Schwartzberg, an American director, producer, and cinematographer, received the Visionary Award for his compassionate and worldly work in the industry. The previous Visionary Award honoree was His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, the only one given in the 20-year history of the festival.
