Hawaii is best known for its pineapple produce and sugar plantations. With Hawaii’s last remaining sugar cane plantation ending operations this year, it will truly be the end of an era. What better way to understand Hawaii’s rich agricultural history than with a visit to a sugar cane plantation. You can get an understanding for the role sugar has played in Hawaii at the Alexander & Baldwin sugar cane museum. Of course, you don’t want to miss a chance to visit the pineapple fields either. Come explore Maui and taste locally grown fresh pineapple.
The Maui Lavender Farms are another place you won’t want to miss. It is upcountry in Kula and has amazing views of Central Maui and the Pacific Ocean. Lavender is not native to Maui, however it has acclimated well to Kula’s Mediterranean climate. The lavender blooms year round on 13.5 acres of farm located at an elevation of 4,000 feet! The farm was created by Ali’i Chang and also includes olive trees, succulents, hydrangea, protea and more. One of the most exciting parts is the range of offerings in the store, which includes coffee, tea, scones, jams, cooking spices, lotions, and more. All of these items include the farm’s signature lavender, even the coffee!
Not too far from the Kula Lavender Farm is the Surfing Dairy Goat Farm, located in lower Kula on the slopes of the Haleakala Crater. At the Surfing Dairy Goat Farm you can take a tour of the facilities to understand how the cheese is made. Along the way you’ll see the cutest goats and at the end we highly recommend doing a cheese tasting! Your choice of cheese is paired with bread and crackers making for a delicious treat. Cheese, chocolates and other items are also available for purchase.
One of the newer Maui grown companies is the Organic Vodka Distillery, created in 2005 by Shay Smith. The goal was to create eco-friendly, non-perishable organic vodka. Ocean Vodka is now sold in 36 states, 2 Canadian provinces, and is expanding further into North America, South America and Asia. The tour gives you an understanding of the facilities and how the Vodka is made. For example, 80 proof Vodkas are 60% water, which has a big impact on taste. For this reason, the company uses deep ocean mineral water, which is sourced from 3,000 feet below the Big Island. Although the water gets desalinated, it retains its rich mineral composition of potassium, calcium and magnesium. Come taste the organic vodka yourself and ask the guide about cocktails that fit your tastes.
